The primary purpose of an English course is to learn to use language effectively in written and oral communication. This course involves a substantial amount of reading, writing, grammar, and critical thinking. Each student must complete four book reports during the year, one for each quarter. In addition, the courses listed include specific writing skills and literature study.
 
English I – The emphasis on writing requires multiple short stories and essays, a poetry collection, an autobiography booklet, and a major research paper. English I offers a basic introduction to literature so that students will understand and learn to appreciate different genres of literature including: short stories, biographies, poetry, the novel, and more.

English II – Writing instruction includes journals, reflection, description, biography, narrative, cause-and-effect, process analysis, news reporting, and a major research paper. In addition, English II offers a basic introduction to world literature so that students will understand and learn to appreciate the intellectual history of several different cultures.

English III – Writing instruction includes journals, reflection, description, biography, narrative, cause-and-effect, news reporting, responding to and interpreting literature, comparative analysis, and a major research paper. In addition, English III offers a basic introduction to American literature from the pilgrims to the present in order that students will understand and learn to appreciate the intellectual history of the United States of America.

English IV – Writing instruction includes essays, news reporting, responding to and interpreting literature, comparative analysis, and a major senior research paper. In addition, English IV offers a basic introduction to the literature of England from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Twentieth Century so that students will understand and learn to appreciate the principle origins and historical expressions of the English language.

A.P. English Literature – (Pre-requisite B or above in last English class) The primary purpose of this course is to enrich the students’ understanding of Art and Literature. Students will apply their discoveries through writing essays, creative writing, art projects, oral reports, and four research papers. Students will take the Advanced Placement exam at the end of the class.
